For lenders, the problem with granting a mortgage on a houseboat is that you might sail away, taking the security for the mortgage with you. I do not know of any building societies that would help, but Barclays has a marine finance department that offers loans. Most borrowers want loans to buy a boat for leisure use but you may be successful with a live-aboard boat too.

The 385 is probably the more sensible option - I think it would accommodate us perfectly. However it's just a pipe dream for now, we've yet to sail Pinafore across the Atlantic - I'll guess we'll see what happens when we get back from that!

Yes, the 385 would be very nice. In the meantime, sailing across the Atlantic should be a great adventure, I envy you.
