The Residential Boat Owners Association
Aims and Objectives
The Residential Boat Owners’ Association exists to promote the interests of
people living on boats in the British Isles. It does this by:
1. Safeguarding existing residential moorings and increasing their numbers
throughout the country
2. Maintaining and supporting a variety of liveaboard lifestyles
3. Encouraging high standards of boat ownership and residence
4. Promoting good relations between boat owners and their land /
waterlords and with other waterway users
5. Negotiating with National and Local Authorities in all matters that are
relevant to RBOA membership
6. Encouraging mobile craft to cruise
RBOA History
The Residential Boat Owners’ Association was formed in 1963 by a group of
boat dwellers in London. It is the only national organisation which
exclusively represents those who’ve chosen to make a boat their home. Our
membership is continuously expanding as more and more people choose a
lifestyle afloat.
Benefits of Membership
Members are kept in touch with the RBOA through our bi-monthly
newsletter/magazine, Soundings. Members of the committee and area reps
are available to give advice on matters relating to residential boating, and
are pleased to assist with any problems you may have. You are always
welcome to attend RBOA Committee Meetings which take place every few
weeks. RBOA deals with all residential boating issues. Any member may
stand for the committee – or be co-opted for a particular purpose.
Remember, when negotiating on your behalf with navigation authorities,
planning authorities and local and central government, for things such as
increased numbers of legal residential moorings, we need the strength of as
many members as possible!
