We've just bought a 'Birchwood' 22 with a very old Volvo AQ115A petrol engine. Does anyone know if we need to put an additive in the petrol? Or how you can tell if it has been converted to accept unleaded petrol?

Hi Martin
Sorry but not sure about the petrol engine - have googled it but nothing says you need additive in petrol engine - just trying to sell you other stuff to clean the engine. Hope you are well.

Hi Andy, i'm fine thanks...hope you and 'She who must be obeyed' are well.
Hi Roy, thanks for that link. I'm sure Billy will be able to help. Unleaded petrol does the valves in, I think, in old engines ( Noah had a similar one to mine!).

Billy here. Well I haven't said anything because I don't know the answer. I don't know of any way of checking if the valve seats have been changed. You would only know if you have paid for it! I never bothered on the Landy but I did knock the timing back a bit to mitigate. Yes it will damage the engine but you have to do a few miles and lead replacement additive may help but I don't know if their claims are accurate. Perhaps a search on historic car forums may come up with something. A Volvo agent might know if you could find the right chap. I did find this forum link which talks about it. www.ybw.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-182261.htmlbilly
