What are the downsides of cruising continuously?

We have spent time continual cruising and enjoyed it. We are retired so there wasn't the problem of getting to work. Arranging to have your mail delivered somewhere can be a problem, but we found most local post offices will take in your mail for you. Downsides! I suppose, keeping the car nearby so it's available when needed. although We didn't find that a problem ( we are on the Norfolk Broads and it's amazing how many places are linked by a reasonable walk, and we love walking) Then every few days you need to move on to a different area, again we enjoy having a fresh outlook every few days. So some may find it doesn't suit them but generally we quite enjoyed the lifestyle.

How many batteries should be enough if you are constantly on the move? What else should I consider to be self-sufficient? thank you so much!

Hi mavale, shish, that is a tough one. Look at it another way, what you don't use you don't need to make. I did the calculations to make us have 4 days between charging but it ended up as 2 days. Will you just rely on the engine to recharge the batteries or will you have something else? Perhaps shorepower battery charger, DC low voltage generator or AC mains generator. Normal batteries do not like being taken below 50% charge and preferably not less than 80% for a longer life. Battery life depends on cycles, the amount of times they can be discharged and recharged. The better the battery the more cycles you will get. What will you be hoping to do with the power from the batteries? Are you going to want domestic washing machines, water heating, fridges, tv, computers etc? Or more basic living with a light or two and a 12V tv or radio? Batteries themselves come in a massive range of sizes and types. Some need looking after more than others and some can be abused a bit but need attention. Horses for courses. The more info you have the better we can make guess at your potential needs. Have you looked at this site. They have a big archive of info regarding this type of info. Just a thought. www.canalworld.net/forums/billy
